For our first interview we got to interview the tri-state area latin metal band Ill Niño. We visit them at their record studio in New Jersey where we spent three hours, before we even began the actual interview, being basically a fly on the wall having fun. The guys were packing, getting ready to embark on the European tour, and despite this, the guys were great to be around. All in all, It was a very relaxed and fun environment and shows on the following interview with Diego and Christian. PARCE MUSIK: You are about to embark on a European tour. Any surprises European fans can expect? Christian: we are gonna play a couple of songs in Europe we haven't play in a while. We are gonna play my resurrection. we never played that in Europe, so that's new, that's been fun to play that song but you know that's gonna be a good solid set, we are going to take a really good light show with us. So it should be theatrical. Our lighting guy is doing lights for Britney Spears right now so you know is going to be very poppy. So we'll go for it. with the economy being so messed up what else you gonna do PARCE MUSIK: Are you touring in places you haven't tour before? Christian: Russia. First time. it should be great. I mean, I've been dying to check out Russia, see what the Russian fans are like. I heard that they're out of their mind, crazy and insane... and I hope is all true. I want to check out red square too. do you wanna go to red square? Diego: let's do this. you know me, I love history Christian: let's smoke some pot on red square. do you think we'll get in trouble? Diego: you probably would. Christian: [laughs] i did at the Vatican... i have pictures to prove it Diego: you went to confess your sins afterwards... Christian: we are Rastafarians [laughs] PARCE MUSIK: Who would you like to tour with that you haven't got a chance? Christian: well, on this tour we are touring with the good friends of ours from God Forbid. Also a New Jersey based metal band. You know, even though Ill Niño is a little bit more all over the country we call ourselves, New York metro area i guess. God forbid is gonna be touring with us, and you know, good friends of ours, we know them since like the band started. We played the New Jersey Metalfest like in 2000 with them and it's almost ten years later and we did went on tour with them on... Diego: 2006 Christian: 2006. So that was like 3 months ago ...in musical memory. [laughs] And Exilia, a cool band with a female singer. Diego: Dave (Chavarri) is helping them out. He is out there... a few months ago he was out there helping them out. He was producing the record I think. Christian: In the future, i don't know we would like to tour with bands that we like. maybe Lamps Burning or Periphery, I don't know ... and Britney Spears. Since we have her light show we could probably cut cost by sharing. We pay half, she pays the other half ... but we have to headline. And Diego has to have burritos on the rider. Diego: ...On the riders, and tacos Christian: he definitely doesn't want mayonnaise Diego: oh my God. You put mayonnaise on my food and i'll kill you. I get violent with mayonnaise.
"I've been kind of babbling with some of the flamingo parts already and I know that we've been already talking about our ideas for the next record." PARCE MUSIK: have you worked on any new material for an upcoming album? any album in the horizon? Christian: yeah, we want to hopefully get to work on the record sometime soon. we haven't necessarily had the time to you know, (to) start writing the next record. but I'm sure that we will have a lot of material individually that we kind of start compiling and try to get into the mode of writing songs but I don't know, unless, if Diego already wrote the whole next record... I'm not sure. Diego: hmm, no. no. I didn't write the whole record maybe just a bit of bit. I've been kind of babbling with some of the flamingo parts already and I know that we've been already talking about our ideas for the next record. maybe not as far as when will it start but at least what we might be leaning towards. Definitely, I think everybody is almost ready to start working on a new one. PARCE MUSIK: is there a new approach compare to previous album (Enigma)? Christian: I guess we have thought about it but I would say that is probably gonna be even more different than the other records we put out. maybe no instruments but we make instruments out of things, like we use pots and pans. [laughs] Diego: [laughs] one tight shoe string on a broomstick Christian: and that would probably be the most original thing we ever done. Diego: we are gonna start experimenting even more [laughs] Christian: instruments don't even touch the tip of the iceberg of what you can do with music [laughs] Diego: i remember in 3rd grade we got a shoe box and then we cut out a hole and tight rubber bands around it Christian: you can sing into it Diego: or you can put rubber bands ... an acoustic box guitar PARCE MUSIK: we've seen this lady playing violin with two pieces of metal on the New York Subway. Christian: why not. You see. I'm sure there was a cool band back in the day that made the whole concept. I made a joke out of them right now but they still... the German industrial band. They made beats but they never recorded a drum. They always recorded a guy slapping a bathtub and then a guy hitting like a pot or a guy smoking pot [laughs] PARCE MUSIK: Dimebag. It's said, used a beer can or bottle to play some solos. Christian: you see. A lot of bands do that now. Diego: didn't System of a Down play with a vibrator? [everyone laughs] Diego: i read it. I read it. PARCE MUSIK: who's vibrator was that? Diego: i don't know who's vibrator was. Maybe they all share it. [everyone laughs] PARCE MUSIK: maybe we shouldn't ask those things. we don't care to know. [everyone laughs] PARCE MUSIK: do you guys plan to record in your new studio? Christian: uh, we are talking about it you know. I'm not sure. If we were to do a record here, we probably have to rent out like a really big rig with a lot of really expensive shit. We've talk about it. we'll see how things go and whatever is more convenient as we live kind of spread out around the country. Whatever makes more sense. Last record we recorded in six months. Me personally I would like to try something different on this record, be somewhere else. But we'll see when that time comes. Right now we really only have the European tour ahead of us so we're just trying to get through that first. You know, we might go to Europe and when we go to flight back from Russia the country may have disappeared. Like, it was there! what happened? America is not there anymore. Diego: California is on the verge of being gone Christian: It doesn't have to be a natural disaster, like a magician could make America disappear. Diego: Chris Angel Christian: yea, like Chris Angel made a mistake. you know, pull a magic trick and the hat is suppose to disappear and the whole fucking country disappears and have nowhere to land. I guess we could flight US Airways and we land on the Hudson river. [everyone laughs]
"if the label doesn't want to take a shower and wash their balls thats their problem" PARCE MUSIK: you changed label in 06 so how is the relationship with new label (Cement Shoes Records) compare to RoadRunner? Christian: we are changing labels yet once again. Just because it's cool. Diego: it's like a new cell phone. Christian: yea, it's like you change your underwear why can't you just change labels... when the label gets dirty Diego: you change your label and your underwear Christian: i mean. If the label doesn't want to take a shower and wash their balls that's their problem Christian: I don't wanna smell your balls [laughs] if you are my label. It's tough times you know, it's tough times [laughs] PARCE MUSIK: does this label have a name? Christian: there is a couple of labels that we are looking at but we hopefully make a decision on the right one. Not like the decision we made on this last one. So if we learn anything from our decision making process in the last couple of years is, there is talks that Britney Spears is gonna sign us. I don't know if it's true. I hope it is. Diego: i talk to her a little bit. Christian: we have her light show Diego: we do have her light show actually Christian: [laughs] no, but we'll see quickly enough. i don't wanna speak to soon or anything
"Danny, who is a great roller, (he really should work for like Cohiba or something like that) rolled a cross joint" PARCE MUSIK: what is the most special/meaningful thing that happened in 2008? Christian: the most meaningful thing was smoking a pineapple express joint [laughs] Diego: i have more things i wanna forget Christian: well, on new years eve i got engaged. so that's almost kinda like last year this year. but a couple of months before that also, Danny, who is a great roller, (he really should work for like Cohiba or something like that) rolled a cross joint [laughs] ... the thing smoked good. [laughs] i have pictures to prove that as well. [laughs] That's because no one really believes I'm out there doing that stuff. PARCE MUSIK: who are your influences? can you look back at one of your albums and pin point to certain artist, music, world event that was inspiring to you? Diego: I was and still am really into politics actually. I love reading about politics and history. I really love to read anything Che Guevara wrote, that’s a big influence in my life. Musically... right now.. personally I’m really into like Tears for Fears right now. It's probably my main thing that I do to... when I’m going to listen to music.. I probably listen to it everyday, so... its been pretty consistent for me now... I been listening to that for a while... and Che Guevara, I been reading for 5+ years now.
"I used to be very politically active... I was into activism and all that’s stuff. I would like to get back into it, and I probably will." PARCE MUSIK: Have you seen The Motorcycle Diaries? Diego: yeah, i own it... i wanna see the new movie actually... PARCE MUSIK: which one? Diego: its about... its called Che the revolutionary or something... I heard its about 5 hours long... I gotta check Guevara – I love it... I used to be very politically active... I was into activism and all that’s stuff. I would like to get back into it, and I probably will. I might, personally for what I believe in. Christian: I have a lot of different influences. I’m into politics as well... you know
"Other than music than I’m into. Usually the quest for knowledge, and if not knowledge; just the quest for bullshit." Diego: me and him, we go back and forth Christian: geology, I love geology, astronomy, a lot of cool things. Other than music than I’m into. Usually the quest for knowledge, and if not knowledge; just the quest for bullshit. You could also say this... Because when you want answers you might be actually searching for bullshit. Or a bullshit story about something. So, I guess to learn is the ultimate, the thing I kind of like other than music. Learn new shit. If we get to travel somewhere and I don’t get to see something. Just to kind of learn what that country is about, perhaps where they come from. And music, I really listen to everything. I love death metal, The Police or Elliot Smith. Fiona Apple... why not?
"There’s an entire world of knowledge, which I wanna know. You wanna go out and you wanna learn. Why should you be content with these four walls you live in." Diego: there’s an entire world out there... a lot of people are confined to their 4 walls that they are living. my parents, they are very old school. My parents, They both come from Mexico and I’m first generation born in the U.S. and to them, life is.. not very small but to them is just you grow up, you get a job, you have a family. and I never really thought that way. There’s an entire world of knowledge, which I wanna know. You wanna go out and you wanna learn. Why should you be content with these four walls you live in. Don’t be scare to go outside and learn things. Christian: besides current events and music, pot and pizza! Diego: French fries and lots of hot sauce Christian: for you it might be fries, for me its pizza. Those definitely influenced my life [laughs]. Elliot Smith. probably very shocking for me to be listening to. You probably never heard of him but he’s a great, very abstract guitar player. Kind of reminds me of like an old’s new style version of Johnny Cash on acid [laughs]. Yeah its very trippy. I like all sorts of music, death metal, there some new bands that I kind of dig. Massive Attack is a very cool band, I probably shouldn’t be listening to them either... probably, fans would probably go – what are you doing listening to them? ... (smoking pot). Kye is cool, Kye is a very cool band. There’s a bunch of music man, I can’t recall it all from the top of my head.
"Music will forever continue, but the music industry might not." PARCE MUSIK: when you look back at 10yrs? what notorious changes highlight Ill Niño career and what are the changes that you notice in the music industry. Christian: well, music will forever continue, but the music industry might not. When I think of highlights I would say the whole career in the band has been a clusterfuck of highlights. I know that’s not the right word to put right next to highlight, but sometimes it is. It’s just a big clusterfuck of highlights. Cause probably some of the best memories I have in the band, were the worst ones. Cause You know what they say, the most shocking terrifying memories are the ones that stick with you forever. Like, oh my God I can’t believe that happened. Like Spinal tab moments.
"...The most shocking terrifying memories are the ones that stick with you forever..." Still a lot of cool things. We got to go to places, a lot different cultures. Not a lot of bands get to experience that. A lot of bands from the U.S don’t get the chance to travel outside the U.S. a lot of people just tour the U.S. we got to go to a lot of new places, those are probably the most memorable moments. The last time I went to Europe I went to the Eiffel Tower for the first time. Even though I had been there [in France] 10 times over, so last time I got to see it. Even though we been touring for like years and years, there are still things that I haven’t done. You know... its that quest for whatever it is...

- PARCE MUSIK: we read about the crazy Californian fan with the taser gun. How is she doing? any new interesting stories of her?
Christian: she was threating our tour manager, cause a couple of tours before that, she came to a show and was saying that she worked for us, and was trying to keep people out... "Yeah, I’m security for the band and all this and all that..." but, you know, it really was just an overprotecting fan. That’s really what it was, but she was so hurt by the fact that our tour manager saw the overprotection of the fan as something that could harm our relationship with promoters because she wasn’t really being civil about the whole thing. So, our tour manager had to take certain precautions... and say the promoters are not too happy about this... just watch the show, but you can’t keep hassling people... the next time she came, she had a taser gun, she was wearing her permit to carry on her arm around her neck. And was threating Benji. PARCE MUSIK: what's the latest about this fan?Christian: we haven’t seen her since. She actually parked in front of the bus and didn’t let the bus move. Until, literary, our tour manager had to find her and tell her we gonna call the police. But it really was just an overprotecting fan, somehow had this crazy idea that she was security for the band. Not sure, you would have to ask her. PARCE MUSIK: so, no mayonnaise on the hot dogs, what else?Diego: no mayonnaise on anything Christian: I like mayo Diego: I would like to meet the person that invented mayonnaise... and beat them Christian: if you beat the person that invented mayonnaise, so many people would be upset by that Diego: I know man, but... Christian: the whole world be so hurt by you Diego: I’m positive, I’m in the minority – cause I despise mayonnaise. Cause everybody, especially in my band here – loves mayonnaise Christian: mayonnaise makes the world go around. [all laugh] Diego: they love to tease me about it. Christian: we put it on like all sorts of weird shit and like hmm... rice with mayonnaise Diego: they do, you think it’s a joke, mayonnaise and hot sauce on rice and I just seat there... and I have to leave... I get violent around mayonnaise. Christian: so, if your hell would be to work on a mayonnaise factory. Diego: my hell would have to be the mayonnaise's taster. PARCE MUSIK: if you want to add something...Christian: keep your head up in this hard times... when tough times arrive J'ai pas eu le temps de tout lire, mais apparemment ils envisagent de changer de label ! J'essayerais de faire une traduction quand j'aurais le temps. | |
